TROTMAN WINS AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

The Australian WASZP Nationals has concluded and all the warm-ups are now complete for the 2019 International WASZP Games.

The pre-event served as a great way for most of the sailors to test out the glamourous Perth conditions and familiarise themselves with the race track. 56 boats competed in the 2nd ever Australian Championship and was sailed in 12-18knot SW seabreezes.

Day 1 was the strongest of the 3 days with 3 races being completed. Rory Hunter from GBR showed he will be a force to be reckoned with come the WASZP Games by claiming 2 bullets and a 4th to sit on level points with Australian Tom Trotman. What become evident was that any of the top 20 could sit on the podium in a race if they get a good start and stay clean.

Day 2 and there was a little less breeze however more than enough to complete 3 races in more glamour conditions. This was Trotmans day with another consistent 1,2,3 scorecard to take the lead by 2pts going into the final day. The day also provided some thrills and spills with HKG sailor Nicolai Jacobsen and Jon Holroyd coming together after Jacobsen capsized shearing the mast at decklevel, however such is the durability of the boats the support boat raced another bottom section out to Jacobsen who was then able to rejoin the series. The culture in the WASZP has become a real feature of the class, with a really friendly, relaxed vibe on-shore and some top level racing on the water.

Day 3 promised so much however didn’t deliver, a 40 degree day and a soft seabreeze with lots of holes in it meant racing could not continue. Thus giving Tom Trotman his first WASZP Australian Championship, Rory Hunter from GBR in 2nd while Jon Holroyd a former Sabre national champion finished in 3rd.

The Games start today the 22nd and after a great warm-up with the Aussie Nationals and International Slalom we are ready and the wind is looking like it is going to be full noise!
