WASZP - Southern hemisphere EVENTS heating up!

WINNER! Harry Mighell

It has been a busy month for the WASZP team post christmas!

We hope that all WASZP sailors have managed to either get some free sailing in or head to an event.

Australian National Championships

36 WASZP racers took on the first ever Australian National Championships. What an event this turned out to be with a festival atmosphere and top level racing, all competitors left the Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club with plenty of smiles and good times.

Reigning WASZP Games Champion Harry Mighell won the series convincingly from Jon Holroyd in 2nd and another Sorrento local, Tom Trotman rounding out the podium.

From a Youth side of things it was great to see young Hugo Llewelyn improve dramatically during the regatta, giving the leaders a run for their money with a second place in Heat 4.

In the Masters, Jon Holroyd sailed an extremely consistent event to claim first Master, followed by New Zealander Nick Olson who also had his moments of glory.

Of the Women, Sam England had some great races highlighted by a fourth place in Heat 3. Tess Lloyd improved out of sight over the four days and with minimal foiling experience before the event to finish every race and have some great results – it shows the future if very bright for women in the WASZP class.

The 6.9m rigs had some close racing, won by Jack Felsenshall, who again pushed hard off minimal foiling time leading into the event.

Also very creditable he made it to the Slalom final on a 6.9m rig, showing the versatility of this sail and a great product for lighter guys and girls in the class.

The Slalom racing was a significant highlight of the event with the final being a classic, won on the final gybe by Tom Brewer, there was only 10 seconds
separating first and sixth in the eight-boat final.

Pacific Championships

The first installment of the trans-tasman rivalry is set to occur over the 3,4,5th of March 2018 from Manly Sailing Club in NZ. There are expectations of 25-30 boats with interest from in Australia to send a small but quality contingent of sailors. Both fleets are primed from their recent National Championships and the WASZP event lifestyle is in full swing now. Russell Coutts, Mike Pasco and their team are dealing with everything very well. UK Nationals

The innaugural UK Nationals will be held from the 10th-13th of May at Rutland. WASZP Games 2019

In November we welcomed the news that Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Perth will host the 2019 WASZP Games. This will be a spectacular event with early indications of 120+ boats with a number of countries comitting to containers. The Swan River is the perfect place for WASZP sailing, with 15-20knot seabreezes coming in like clockwork and flat water with minimal traffic. The fleet in Perth now has 10+ boats sailing since the first boats were delivered in October. We expect 25 local Perth boats will be on the water before the Games, early expectations are for 70+ Aussie boats in attendance.
